I was very excited to see that FirstSight, the controversial art gallery in Colchester is hosting an exhibition of photographs by Martin Parr until 2 October 2016. I haven’t been yet but will make a point of going along next time I am in the area and will of course report back.
Alongside the exhibition there is a free competition on the theme The Essence of Essex that is going to be judged by Martin Parr Himself!!!
It is an opportunity too good to miss, so I have trawled through my archive of photographs taken around Colchester, Brightlingsea and Essex and submitted a few. I have sorted a few more out and will submit them each week until the competition closes. Most photos will become part of an art installation in the gallery and there is a small prize for the weekly and overall winners.
Entries need to be made via their partner Zealous which turns out to be quite a useful site that links to all manner of photography competitions. On the Zealous site you can see all of the submissions so far and perhaps even vote for your favourite (hopefully mine of course).
While watching some men climbing the steeple of the URC church in Colchester’s Red Lion Precinct I noticed the sun shining through some ice crystals in the clouds to create some beautiful colours.
Photos from this weekend’s carnival in Colchester
The last time I went to Colchester carnival I think I watched it from my Dad’s shoulders, so it was a real treat to be in town when the parade went past this year.
Sadly I didn’t realise that the naked bike ride was also passing through the town an hour or so later, so you have been spared the photos of that event!
I love an untidy garage! I have no idea what anything in there is used for but the mess of tools, paint and fuel smells is very intriguing to me and I think it tells me a lot about the owner.
This was a fun project on a rainy afternoon.
This weekend I was treated to a day out with my brother at The Tendring Show. I’ve never been to a country show before and relished the opportunity to go to a typically British event with my camera.
There was everything there from a pigeon show, dog agility tests, a pipe band and the usual sheep, goats, cows and horses. Below are a few of the many photos I took hoping to capture a flavour of the day.

I had a great day and may need to investigate entering the art competition next year!
Some photos of the people that attended #ArmedForces Day this weekend #AFDNEL16
The whole point of going to the Armed Forces Day this weekend was to take some photographs of the crowds and of the people that attended the show, and between the displays that is what I tried to do. Here are a few of my favourites.
